Big cheater left job incomplete

This person gave us a good price. So we went ahead and gave him the contract to do our garden. He said he needed money to order materials on sun to start job from wed and he confirmed his workers will take come and start job. We transferred him £2000. He/his workers neither turned up nor he reviewed any of our calls. He finally received call after 10days and said his workers let him down etc. And he came and said he needed more money has the money we paid was insufficient for materials. When we expressed our disappointment he said he is broke and utilised our money to pay for his mothers treatment etc., now we paid entire money more than what we agreed and he's left the job halfway (not complete weeds started growing again) and runaway. People please BE AWARE do not fall into the trap. He's dangerous. We trusted him to complete the job and paid entire £5320 and having sleepless nights for not having the garden ready. Do not give him any work please.
